Summer Wine

Summer Wines – Tips & Recommendations

Warm sunny days and social gatherings are making a comeback for the first time in a long time, and we are here for it. We know you are just as ready as we are to get back some semblance of normalcy after the overwhelming events of 2020.

Summer brings brighter days and lots of outdoor fun, including relaxing time by the pool, patio parties, and outdoor barbecues. This weekend, don’t forget to splurge on summer wines to celebrate the changing of the seasons.

Summer Whites

When we think of summer wines, we most often lean towards the crisp whites. However,  Rosé, is a popular pick no matter what time of year.  It is a perfect summer wine because of it’s freshness and reminds us of warm sunny days on the patio, the pool, or at a picnic.

Some other refreshing white summer wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling, which make for a light and fun experience. If you want to celebrate and make the day extra special,  then a little, Prosecco, Cava, and Moscato are perfect party pairings! You can check out some more top picks for summer sips here.

Summer Reds

Typically, red wines are associated with winter due to their rich, full-bodied features. But House of Townend offers some advice for red wine lovers looking for a summer pairing: “Look for reds which are high in acidity, lower in tannin, and also lower in alcohol, making them quite refreshing at outdoor picnics or BBQs.”

Some great examples of summer wines include Pinot Noir, Grenache, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo (which we’ve talked about before – check out our post for pairing it with our Spanish Roasted Bell Pepper Tortilla recipe).

Summer Pairings

Just because the major food holidays are in the fall and winter months, doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of foods that pair perfectly with summertime. Just like we tend to put away the heavy coats and transition to lighter wines as summer approaches, most of us also have seasonal preferences when it comes to food.

Your summer wines will pair perfectly with lighter fare like seafood, charcuterie boards, and salads.
